A Pattern for Joint Operations: World War II Close Air Support, North Africa

Before 1940 the Air Corps had many varieties of cargo transports to serve its own operational flying squadrons. The famous Curtiss C-46 "Commando" (top) and the Douglas C-47 "Gooney Bird" (bottom) were acquired in large numbers to meet the expanding requirements of all services. In close air support tasks these aircraft provided the ground forces with both cargo personnel airborne transport.
